In 2023, the Digital Apron and Tower Management System (DATMS), jointly implemented by the Civil Aviation Department and the Airport Authority Hong Kong, won the “Technology Innovation Awards” of the Airports Council International (ACI).
The system is undertaken by Chinney Alliance Engineering. As the main contractor, Chinney Alliance Engineering is responsible for implementing what is recognized as one of the world's largest and most sophisticated digital tower facilities and digital apron management systems. Equipped with over 240 cameras and 120 workstations, the system can automatically stitch together multi-angle images, allowing air traffic control personnel to monitor the apron in real time throughout the day. Through visualization of flight information and runway vehicle identification, the system delivers intuitive and easy data access, streamlining what was previously a manual retrieval process and improving operational efficiency. The system's safety benefits are particularly evident during adverse weather conditions such as heavy fog and poor visibility. Enhanced with AI, it provides advanced warning capabilities to mitigate various operational risks faced by the airport.
