Exclusive Interview:Mr. Huang Ching-poh, Warehouse Manager of Chinney Construction

Half a Century of Service – Witnessing the Growth of the Group

Known fondly as “Po Gor” (Brother Po) throughout the Chinney Group, Mr. Huang Ching-poh’s over-fifty- year service with the Group spans every significant milestone in its history. Through his half-century tenure, the fraternal bonds among colleagues stand as his most cherished memory. The company’s strong sense of camaraderie has enabled the team to consistently overcome challenges and progress steadily.

As the last apprentice of the late Mr. Wong Chor-choi, father of Dr. James Wong Sai-wing, Po Gor reflects: “Mr. Wong was very kind to me. He not only taught me about the construction industry but also about life. He treated me as one of his own.” He later broadened his professional horizons through positions at other companies. In 1975, when Chinney Construction was established, Dr. James Wong Sai-wing invited Po Gor to return. In gratitude for the elder Mr. Wong’s mentorship, Po Gor accepted the offer, rejoining as a site agent overseeing manpower allocation and project progress. He later became Chinney Construction’s Warehouse Manager, marking a remarkable 50-year tenure.

During the 1997 financial crisis, Chinney’s projects were also impacted, with potential massive losses looming if projects failed to meet their completion deadlines. Po Gor and Mr. Zuric Chan (Vice Chairman of Chinney Investments) stood shoulder to shoulder through endless nights, driven by their singular goal of timely project delivery “The fire safety inspection preparations were our most critical hours,” Po Gor remembers. “After pulling an all-nighter with Mr. Chan, we caught a brief rest in the car, shared morning dim sum, and were ready to return to site. Despite Mr. Chan’s urging me to head home, I stayed on to help.” The project ultimately met its completion deadline.

Reflecting on fifty years at Chinney, Po Gor found not just a workplace but a home, marked by the unbreakable bonds of brotherhood with his colleagues. His parting wish: may the next generation guide Chinney to greater summits and ever more brilliant horizons.
